Trained support champions of the PERD project have engaged various groups in their communities; persons with disabilities, churches, houses and the general community members on education and sensitization of human rights, disability right and sexual and gender based violence (SGBV).
In Ajumako/Enyan/Essiam district, the support champions with the assistance from the Social Welfare officer of the district organised an education session of disability rights for the Physically challenged group of the GFD. They explained what rights are, gave some examples of basic rights and further explained what the disability rights are. They organised this to empower the disability community on their rights so that they would recognize when its being trampled on by others.
Support champions of Mfanstiman Municipal have also conducted sensitization exercise for the St. Elizabeth Catholic church of Abandze. They introduced the PERD project to the church and further spoke on sexual and gender based violence prevention. In their submission they stressed that helping to bring perpetrators of sexual violence offenders to the law for punishment would deter others. They added that SGBV can be prevented through education, reporting unsual advances, reporting sexual offences and others.
The support champions of Gomoa West also organised a sensitasation for the people of Mumford and Apam on sexual and gender based violence.
Support Champions in Cape Coast School for the Deaf and Blind have been engaging their colleagues in school on what SGBV is, its causes, effects and prevention.
In all three implementation districts and municipal assemblies aside the group education and sensitization support champion also speak to people individually. In Mfantsiman municipal for instance support champions have been able to convince some parents and caretakers of persons with disabilities to register them with the GFD. in one case a grandmother who was only keeping her grandson in the room because of his disability has gone to register him with the social welfare and GFD and also enrolled him in school. In the same municipal another woman who has been hiding her teenage daughter because of her physical disability has gone to register her with social welfare and making arrangements to enroll her in an apprenticeship of her choice. The GFD chairperson and some support champions in the Gomoa West District have also helped to report a case of SGBV against a girl in their community.
Support champions are still working, educating, sensitizing and supporting other WGDs to benefit from the PERD project.
